A mechanical Fitter is responsible for fitting and assembling parts made from metal and other materials to make production machinery. They can work in various industries, for example, the Auto industry.

Fitters & Turners maintain and repair many different kinds of machines. Fitters and Turners are highly skilled craftspeople who manufacture, construct, assemble and fit components for machinery. If you consider yourself good with metal and repairing parts, then a career as a Fitting & Turner may be just for you!
Pipefitters attach pipes to walls, structures, and fixtures, such as radiators or tanks, using brackets, clamps, tools or welding equipment. This trade is also used in mining and also in construction
Mechanical fitters use their tools and engineering techniques to maintain and repair mechanical plant machinery and equipment to operational standards. Work includes the identification of defective or worn mechanical components or equipment, repair or replacement of worn or faulty components and modifications. Mechanical fitters also use precision measuring instruments to check parts to fit.
Mechanical fitters may be employed in the trades and services industry area, often employed in Perth’s industrial areas, or in the mining industry in areas such as the Pilbara, Kimberley, and Goldfields.
A mechanical fitter needs:
- to enjoy technical work
- to be physically fit
- good hand-eye coordination
- to be able to work independently or as part of a team
- practical ability
- Have an eye for detail.
Mechanical fitters work in workshops or mining areas that are usually noisy, hot and dusty. They may spend most of their day standing and often need to bend, crouch or climb. Workers must be aware of safety regulations and wear the correct PPE.
Making and repairing machinery requires mechanical fitters to be familiar with a range of tools and equipment, such as lathes, milling and drilling machines, thermal cutting.
To become a mechanical fitter, need to complete an apprenticeship. The mechanical fitter or fitter and turner apprenticeships usually take 4 years to complete and are available as school-based apprenticeships.
As an apprentice will sign on fora formal training contract with an employer. You spend most of your time working and learning practical skills on the job and you spend some time undertaking structured training with a registered training provider of your choice. They will assess your skills and when you are competent in all areas, you will be awarded a nationally recognized qualification.
If you are still at school you can access an apprenticeship through your school. You generally start your school based apprenticeship by attending school three days a week, spending one day at a registered training organization and one day at work.
